  • Zauschneria or "Hummingbird Fucia" is a  grey-green leaved perennial . Its flowers are an orange to intense red. This plant in my opinion is highly underused, it tolerates a range of conditions from full sun, no water after established , at higher elevations to regular and part shade in the interior valleys or desert. They tolerate almost all conditions, soils and climates. A good ground cover for sunny slopes as it can spread rapidly, yet is never invasive. Just tall enough to attract the hummingbirds, yet can have a bit of a trailing habit making it good for borders and rock gardens. Low enough to be neat and tidy. This plant is sensitive in containers and definately looks best in the garden! So do not get excited when you see this trashed- looking plant at the nursery, it will be VERY happy when you plant it. Blooming Summer through Fall attracting humming birds and livening up the garden with a blanket of red to orange red funnel shaped flowers.
