Baby Blue Eyes Spruce

Picea pungens f. glauca 'Baby Blue Eyes'
Named for the color, not the size. Although the tree is a compact slow grower.

This  Blue Spruce, is a compact blue Spruce with very silvery blue needles. Very slow growing Baby Blue Eyes looks great at every age-small or large, a cone- shaped tree that grows very slowly (2 to 3 inches per year) Its blue color makes it a very attractive addition to any landscape. It is primarily a specimen plant used to add color to the landscape taking up space slowly.  This is an excellent plant for adding structure, color and texture to your yard or garden.  Care and hardiness are similar to Colorado Blue Spruce as this little tree is widely adaptable but prefers well drained soils. This dwarf form of blue spruce is very blue, pyramidal, and can eventually get to a height of 12 ft,  and spread 6-7ft (but not likely in your lifetime unless purchased that way) Plant in full sun. Zones 3-7

West Montrose farms Ltd is the originator of Baby Blue(tm) spruce which are grown from a proprietary seed orchard and has since the mid 1990's produced only all blue seedlings. The trees all grow to full sized Colorado blue spruce in size.

Some special characteristics:
Seedlings grow slower (leader length) than common Colorados until they are about 18" to 24" tall. This makes them look thick and dense at a young age.

Needles grow radially out from around the branches all around the candles, giving a very full bushy appearance.
The leader has a very heavy bud set which helps to fill the body. Some 12" leaders have had 16 buds
