Broom Cystis

Great hedge or low screen. It has long sprays of pea-like blooms very early in spring .Making this a lovely spring accent. A wide, dense mound displays bright green tiny leaves. The shrub has a leafless appearance more reminicent of grass in the summertime. Which is why it is so striking when the fragrant gorgeous blooms appear. This bush has the most wonderful scent to it. It's a soft sweet scent that permeates the air when it is in bloom. Very touchy to pruning. Prune lightly to size and shape every spring right after flowering. Do not let overgrow.  Pruning an overgrown shrub way back usually leads to death due to the fact that mature stems have very few green buds.  Overall, a wonderful plant and a welcome addition to your garden. Drought tolerant and deer resistant. Other varieties include Scotch Broom which have a lighter colored flower.
