Texas Scarlet Flowering Quince
Chaenomeles speciosa 'Texas Scarlet'
This beautiful spreading plant is one of the first shrubs to bloom in the spring. It holds its firey red, apple-blossom-like flowers on bare branches. The flowers emerge first before the foliage appears.  New leaves come out red, and then mature into glossy, green foliage. After the flowers, comes yellow-green fruit this is edible when cooked. Or, just leave them on the bush and let it feed the birds.
This compact beauty makes a lovely specimen plant planted by itself. Or, try it with several others as a bold border, barrier, or a short hedge.  The Texas Scarlet Flowering Quince does best in full to part sun and is adaptable to both dry and moist sites.
